5 out of 5
More 4Play: Mmm . . .
Witty writing, A-list acting, sharp staging, and terrific transitions!
This is the way a program of several shows should be done.
The 5 plays have equal high quality, all being well-written with believable dialogue, intelligent humor, and well-drawn characters. Forest Attaway, Frank Higgins, Teresa Leggard, and Schaeffer Nelson are playwrights to follow.
Scott Cordes directed Jasmine Abou-Kassem, Coleman Crenshaw, Bonnie Griffin, Maya Jackson, Seth Macchi, Nathan Peterson, Matthew Schmidli, Regina Weller, and Meredith Wolfe to play the characters truthfully with a mastery of comic timing. His staging was crisp and varied.
Kudos to whoever designed the transitions. There was barely a blink of dark when a show was over; instead, a character drew our attention while the scene was being changed. Sometimes the character was one we had already met, doing something that continued the action; sometimes it was a character from a show we hadnít seen yet, piquing my interest. Sometimes it was characters from two different shows interacting. My favorite was the survey guy asking the magazine gal to answer questions, but all were excellent. The transitions were delightful little teasers that were clever in themselves, tied the whole program together, and kept me entertained during scene changes.
